Is it time to 'shelf the elf'?
Share
For over a decade, the Elf on the Shelf has been a festive favourite, bringing mischievous fun to homes during the Christmas season. Parents have delighted in staging elaborate antics while children wake up with excitement to see what the elf has been up to overnight. But as enchanting as this tradition can be, it’s worth asking: is it time to shelf the elf?
At its best, the Elf on the Shelf adds a playful spark to the holidays. Yet for many parents, the nightly task of arranging the elf can quickly shift from fun to exhausting, especially amidst the already hectic Christmas season. The pressure to outdo previous years—or to keep up with others on social media—can make the tradition feel more like a chore than a joy.
There’s also the question of the elf’s “spying” role. While meant to encourage good behaviour, the idea of being watched and reported to Santa can create unnecessary anxiety for some children. As we strive to focus on kindness and intrinsic motivation, the surveillance aspect of the elf may feel at odds with these values.
This doesn’t mean the elf has to disappear entirely. For families who adore the tradition, it can be a wonderful way to spark creativity and laughter. But for those feeling the strain, retiring the elf can open the door to simpler, more meaningful holiday rituals—like baking together, enjoying Christmas crafts, or sharing bedtime stories.
The beauty of the season lies in togetherness, not perfection. If the elf still brings joy to your family, keep him around. But if the magic is wearing thin, it might be time to lovingly shelf the elf and embrace a less demanding tradition.
